When Getting Out of Bed Feels Impossible: Start With One Task
Some mornings, just getting up is the whole battle. Not the day, not the to-do list, not whatever’s waiting for you out there in the world — just the getting up. If you live with something like bipolar disorder, you know exactly what I mean. The bed feels like the only safe place, and the weight that keeps you in it is real, even if no one else can see it.
I’m not a doctor, and I’m not going to tell you there’s a trick that makes that weight disappear. There isn’t. But I can tell you what’s helped me on the mornings when getting up feels like too much.
Pick One Thing
Just one. Not the whole day. Not even the whole morning. One task. Make the bed. Open the blinds. That’s it — that’s the assignment.
It sounds small because it is small. That’s the point. On the days when everything feels like too much, a small, doable thing is something you can actually finish. And finishing it means something.
One Step in the Right Direction
Making the bed doesn’t fix a bad day. Opening the blinds doesn’t erase whatever you’re carrying. But it’s one step, moving you in the right direction instead of nowhere at all. And some days, that’s genuinely enough — it’s the thing that gets you from lying down to standing up, from standing up to the next small thing.
If you’re in the middle of one of those mornings right now, I’m not going to tell you to conquer the day. Just make the bed. See what happens after that.
