The Story

What Daybreak is about

In Daybreak, Brittany Peckham delivers an astonishingly honest, often heartbreaking memoir of her lifelong battle with bipolar disorder, from her first emotional outbursts in middle school to full-blown psychosis in adulthood.

Told with brutal clarity and unflinching vulnerability, her story showcases a powerful journey of spiraling loss, surprising setbacks, and the long climb back to stability — as well as all the moments of finding unexpected beauty and peace amidst the turbulent waters, whirlpools, and riptides of manic depression.

This book is a must-read for anyone living with mental illness — or loving someone who is.

An honest warning about what’s inside

Daybreak is not a clinical guide, a medical manual, or a formula for recovery. It is a survival story. It contains sensitive material — including death, suicide, violence, and a psychotic break from reality — that some readers will find difficult. Brittany’s own note to readers puts it plainly:

I share these chapters not because I have all the answers, but because for most of my life, I felt like I was screaming into silence.

From the Preface

Read a passage

If you were to ask me if I would rather choose a life with or without manic depression, I don’t know what I would say. Half of me says that I would choose life with it, and the other half says, "No way in hell would I ever want this life for me or anyone else."

The part of me that chooses it loves the emotions that come with it. They are so raw and intense; I have felt more emotion than I could ever imagine experiencing with this illness.

Who it’s for

You might see yourself in this book if…

You live with bipolar disorder

And you’re tired of accounts that skip the ugly parts or wrap everything in a tidy recovery bow.

You love someone who does

And you want to understand what’s happening on the inside — including the moments that felt, from where you stood, like rejection.

You’ve been hospitalized

And you’ve never found a book that describes a psychiatric stay the way you actually remember it.

You’re early in this

Newly diagnosed, or still wondering. This is one map of the territory — not the only one, but an honest one.
